Omaha, NE (May 18, 2025) – An accident during the Friday morning commute left at least one person injured in Omaha. The crash occurred around 8:10 a.m. on May 16 along Interstate 80 eastbound, near 13th Street. Authorities confirmed that the left shoulder of the roadway was blocked as a result of the collision.
Police and emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene where they assessed and aided the injured. At least one person required further medical treatment and was transported to a local hospital. We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.
Car Accidents in Nebraska
Nebraska sees thousands of car accidents every year, many of them concentrated in urban areas like Omaha. According to the Nebraska Department of Transportation, an average of 40 people are injured in car crashes each day statewide. With changing weather conditions and high-speed traffic corridors, the risk of collisions remains high across Nebraska’s roadways.
Understanding the causes behind these incidents helps shed light on how to stay safer on the roads. Here are several key causes of car accidents in Nebraska:
Distracted Driving: Using a phone, adjusting the radio, or eating while driving pulls attention from the road. Even a few seconds of distraction can result in a crash. Nebraska has made efforts to curb texting while driving, but it remains a persistent issue.
Speeding: Traveling over the speed limit reduces a driver’s reaction time and increases the force of impact in a collision. Many serious crashes on highways, including I-80, are linked to excessive speed. Adhering to posted speed limits helps prevent accidents and reduces injury severity when crashes do occur.
Impaired Driving: Operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs continues to be a leading cause of fatal crashes. Nebraska has strict DUI laws, but impaired driving incidents still occur far too often, especially on weekends and holidays.
Weather Conditions: From icy roads in winter to sudden summer thunderstorms, Nebraska weather creates dangerous driving conditions. Reduced visibility and slick roads can contribute to crashes, even for careful drivers.
Failure to Yield: Ignoring traffic signals or merging without checking blind spots often causes preventable crashes. Many intersection and on-ramp collisions happen because a driver did not yield when required.
