In recent years, the Nebraska Department of Transportation has reported an annual average of over 300 crashes involving cyclists, with dozens leading to serious injuries or fatalities. These incidents often occur at intersections or during turning maneuvers by motorists, making awareness and caution essential.

Accidents involving bicycles can bring unexpected challenges and risks. Here are a few key issues often seen in these types of cases:

Driver Inattention: Many bicycle collisions occur because motorists fail to notice cyclists, particularly when making turns or approaching intersections. Even momentary distractions can lead to tragic results when a cyclist is involved.

Right-of-Way Violations: Cyclists legally using crosswalks or traveling in bike lanes often have the right of way, yet drivers don’t always yield. These violations are a common factor in many serious crashes.

Lack of Infrastructure: In some parts of Nebraska, the infrastructure for safe biking—such as designated lanes or visible signage—is either limited or poorly maintained. This forces cyclists to ride close to traffic or in unprotected areas, increasing the risk of collisions.

Inadequate Lighting and Visibility: Low-light conditions and poor street lighting can contribute to reduced visibility, making cyclists harder to see. Wearing reflective gear and ensuring proper lighting on bikes is crucial, but driver awareness is equally important.

Injury Severity: Cyclists often suffer more serious injuries than vehicle occupants due to the lack of physical protection. Head injuries, fractures, and internal trauma are common outcomes, even at low speeds.

If you or someone you care about was injured in a bicycle crash, it’s important to speak with a bicycle accident attorney in Lincoln.
