Columbus, NE (June 12, 2025) – Two people were hurt Tuesday, June 10, after their SUV left Highway 15 near 823rd Road, about 35 miles northeast of Columbus. The vehicle flew through the air more than 60 feet before landing in a field.
According to the Stanton County Sheriff’s Office, the northbound SUV went off the road into a steep ditch, then into a grass field. The SUV continued at high speed through the grass for several hundred yards.
The vehicle became airborne and flew over 823rd Road before landing in a recently planted bean field. It then traveled another 40 yards before coming to a stop.
First responders rescued the driver, a 73-year-old woman from South Dakota, and her male passenger. Both were wearing seat belts, which officials say helped prevent more serious injuries. The injured parties were taken to a hospital in West Point for treatment.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities continue working to determine how the accident happened. We wish a full and speedy recovery to those injured in this incident.
Vehicle Rollovers and Injury Crashes in Northeast Nebraska
Crashes where vehicles leave the road and become airborne or roll over can cause serious injuries and long-term impacts. In rural areas like
northeast Nebraska, highways such as Highway 15 have stretches with steep ditches and open fields that can worsen the effects of a crash. Drivers may lose control due to speed, distractions, or sudden changes in road conditions. When a vehicle leaves the pavement, it risks flipping or flying through the air, which greatly increases the chance of injury.
Seat belts are critical in these situations. In this case, the driver and passenger were both buckled up, which likely prevented more serious harm. Wearing a seat belt remains the single most effective way to reduce injuries in crashes like this one.
Many accidents on rural highways happen due to speeding, fatigue, or drivers unfamiliar with the road. Weather can also play a role, making roads slick or reducing visibility. Because of these dangers, careful driving is always necessary. Victims of such crashes face medical bills, time off work, and emotional distress. A skilled personal injury attorney can help accident victims get the compensation they need for medical care, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
