Omaha, NE (June 24, 2025) – A Nebraska State Patrol trooper was injured after a crash late Monday, June 23, on Interstate 80 in Omaha.
The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. near 50th Street, as troopers were assisting the Omaha Police Department in diverting traffic from an earlier accident. According to authorities, a box truck slammed into a parked cruiser that had its emergency lights flashing. A trooper was inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Emergency responders took the trooper to a local hospital. Officials stated the injuries were not life-threatening. Another person involved in the collision was also taken to the hospital. The extent of that person’s injuries remains unclear. Three lanes of I-80 were closed while crews cleared the scene and investigated the accident.
This marks the third time in June, and the second time in less than a week, that a Nebraska State Patrol cruiser has been struck on I-80. The Omaha Police Department is leading the investigation into the most recent incident.
Authorities have not said whether any citations or charges will be filed. Updates are expected as the investigation continues.
We send our heartfelt wishes for a full recovery to everyone injured in this incident.
Highway Patrol Vehicle Accidents in Omaha
Omaha sees heavy traffic on major roads like I-80, where fast speeds and high vehicle volume make crashes more likely. When emergency vehicles like police cruisers are struck during duty, serious concerns about road safety and public awareness are raised.
Crashes involving law enforcement vehicles are not only dangerous for the officers involved, but they also disrupt emergency responses and can lead to larger multi-vehicle incidents. Drivers are legally required to move over or slow down for emergency vehicles, yet many fail to do so, putting lives at risk.
The “Move Over” law in Nebraska is designed to protect emergency responders. It requires drivers to shift lanes away from any emergency vehicle stopped on the shoulder with lights flashing. If changing lanes isn’t possible, drivers must slow down significantly. Failing to follow this law can result in steep fines—and even worse, severe injuries or fatalities.
When a crash occurs due to a driver ignoring these rules, it may be possible to file a personal injury claim. A qualified attorney can help injured victims seek compensation for medical bills, lost income, and pain and suffering. Legal teams also assist in navigating insurance processes and holding negligent drivers accountable.
For troopers or others injured while on duty, workers’ compensation might also be available. However, these claims can be complex, and an attorney experienced in both personal injury and employment law can be an invaluable asset.
No one expects a routine traffic stop or accident response to end in injury. But when it does, legal guidance is crucial. Victims often face long recoveries and uncertain futures. An Omaha car accident attorney can investigate the crash, gather evidence, and ensure that the injured receive fair treatment under the law.
