Elmwood, NE (April 2, 2025) – A deadly crash shook the Elmwood area of Cass County on the afternoon of Sunday, March 31, after a car and a semi-truck collided head-on near U.S. Highway 34 and 310th Street.
Authorities say the collision occurred when a westbound SUV, driven by 53-year-old David Noonan of La Vista, veered into oncoming traffic and struck an eastbound semi-truck. The semi was operated by 58-year-old Robert Morton of Lincoln. Emergency personnel arrived quickly and found Noonan unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Morton, who suffered minor injuries, was taken to Bryan West Trauma Center in Lincoln for treatment.
Officials with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office are working in cooperation with the Nebraska State Patrol as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. The cause of the incident has not been confirmed, but the area remained partially closed for several hours as crews worked through debris and cleared the roadway.
We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.
Truck Accidents in Nebraska
Truck crashes in Nebraska are responsible for a significant number of injuries and deaths each year. According to the Nebraska Department of Transportation, large truck accidents accounted for over 1,200 crashes in the most recent reporting year. These types of accidents often result in more severe consequences due to the size and weight of commercial vehicles compared to passenger cars.
In the wake of any serious truck crash, understanding common contributing factors is essential for prevention and legal action. Here are a few important points:
- Driver Fatigue: Fatigue plays a major role in many truck accidents. Long hours behind the wheel can impair judgment, slow reaction times, and lead to poor decision-making. Federal regulations limit driving hours, but not all operators follow these rules carefully.
- Improper Lane Usage: Commercial trucks require more room to maneuver. Sudden lane changes or drifting into other lanes—either by the truck or other drivers—can cause catastrophic head-on or side-impact collisions.
- Mechanical Failures: Tire blowouts, faulty brakes, and other mechanical issues can trigger loss of control. Regular inspections and maintenance are crucial to keeping trucks safe on the road, but oversight or negligence sometimes results in preventable accidents.
- Weather and Road Conditions: Slippery roads, low visibility, and strong winds can all affect truck handling. While these conditions are unavoidable, it’s the responsibility of drivers to adjust their speed and driving style accordingly.
- Blind Spots: Trucks have large blind spots that can make it difficult to see nearby vehicles. Drivers who are unaware of a truck’s no-zone are at a higher risk of being struck during lane changes or turns.
