Lincoln, NE (April 20, 2025) – A man lost his life early Friday morning following a two-vehicle collision in North Lincoln. The crash occurred on April 18, around 5:30 a.m., near the intersection of 56th Street and Fletcher Avenue.
According to Lincoln Police Captain Todd Kocian, a silver Nissan Xterra was heading south on North 56th Street and attempting to turn left onto Fletcher Avenue when it was struck by a northbound Chevy Tahoe. The force of the impact proved fatal for the 63-year-old man driving the Nissan Xterra, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Following the collision, northbound lanes on 56th St were shut down at Schweitzer Rd to allow police and emergency crews to investigate and clear the scene. The roadway reopened shortly before 9 a.m. Authorities continue to investigate the incident and have not released the names of those involved. Further details will be shared as the investigation develops.
We hope the family of the man who died in this crash finds strength and support during this difficult time.
Car Accidents in Nebraska
Every year, thousands of crashes occur on Nebraska roads, and many of them take place in or near intersections. According to the Nebraska Department of Transportation, over 200 people lose their lives annually in traffic collisions statewide. Contributing factors often include distracted driving, speeding, and failure to yield. Lincoln, with its growing traffic volume, continues to see serious crashes, especially during early morning and evening hours.
To better understand what can contribute to these tragic outcomes, let’s explore some common types of injuries seen in car accidents:
Blunt Force Trauma: Injuries from the force of a collision can lead to internal bleeding, organ damage, or broken ribs. Even when airbags deploy, the body may still be subjected to intense physical force, especially in high-speed crashes. Blunt trauma is often life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention.
Spinal Cord Injuries: The violent jerking motion from a crash can damage the spinal cord, leading to temporary or permanent paralysis. Victims may suffer from reduced mobility or chronic pain, impacting their quality of life significantly. Long-term care may include physical therapy, assistive devices, and home modifications.
Whiplash and Soft Tissue Injuries: Whiplash is one of the most common injuries in rear-end or head-on collisions. It affects the neck and shoulders and may not show symptoms right away. While often considered minor, whiplash can lead to long-term discomfort and mobility issues if left untreated.
Psychological Trauma: Survivors of car accidents frequently experience emotional distress, including anxiety, PTSD, or depression. These effects can be just as impactful as physical injuries, affecting sleep, relationships, and overall well-being. Counseling and therapy may be needed to address these challenges.
