North Platte, NE (February 10, 2025) – An injury car crash occurred late on February 8 when an SUV crashed into a shoe store in North Platte, resulting in property damage and one person injured.
The incident happened at approximately 11:46 p.m. at Famous Footwear in District 177, located on S Dewey Street. According to the North Platte Police Department, the SUV, which had an automatic start/stop feature, was parked in front of the store but was not in gear. As the driver attempted to exit the vehicle, they accidentally pressed the accelerator, causing the SUV to surge forward and crash into the storefront.
Emergency responders, including police, firefighters, and paramedics, quickly arrived to assess the situation and provide aid. The injured individual, whose identity has not been released, was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities worked to control traffic in the area while firefighters ensured the structural integrity of the building before clearing the scene.
Store manager Jill Mayeux reported that approximately 100 pairs of shoes were damaged, in addition to significant structural harm to the building. The store is expected to remain closed for at least a week while repairs are completed.
Our thoughts and best wishes go out to the injured victim and their loved ones during this difficult time.
Injury Car Accidents in North Platte
Traffic accidents in North Platte contribute to Nebraska’s rising number of roadway injuries. According to the Nebraska Department of Transportation, the state recorded 23,564 crashes in 2020, resulting in 13,914 injuries and 233 fatalities. While North Platte is a smaller city, incidents involving driver error, mechanical malfunctions, and unexpected acceleration—like the recent crash at District 177—demonstrate the risks that even low-speed accidents pose.
Even at low speeds, car accidents can cause whiplash, concussions, soft tissue injuries, and bruising. Whiplash occurs when the neck is suddenly jerked forward and backward, leading to muscle strain. Concussions can result from the brain impacting the skull, while sprains and bruises often occur due to the force of impact. Symptoms of these injuries may not appear immediately, so seeking medical attention after any collision is crucial to ensure proper treatment and prevent long-term complications.
