North Platte, NE (November 14, 2024) – A fatal car crash occurred on November 12 on Highway 385 near mile marker 93 in western Nebraska, resulting in the death of a 65-year-old woman and the arrest of a 21-year-old man. The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) reported the incident shortly after 3:00 p.m.

According to the NSP, a Chevrolet Express delivery van was traveling southbound on Highway 385 when the driver failed to slow down for a Ford F-150 pickup truck that had stopped, waiting for cattle to cross the road. The driver of the Ford F-150, identified as 65-year-old Kim Wills of Alliance, was immediately attended to by emergency responders, who administered CPR before transporting her to Morrill County Community Hospital. Tragically, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Kim Wills during this challenging time.

Fatal Car Accidents in North Platte: The Case for Immediate Action

Fatal car accidents continue to be a major concern in North Platte and across Nebraska. In 2023, the state reported over 200 fatalities from motor vehicle accidents, with a marked increase in fatalities in rural areas like North Platte. Highways such as Highway 385, commonly used by both long-haul truckers and local drivers, pose significant risks when drivers fail to adjust their speed or stop for other vehicles, as evidenced by the tragic crash on October 14.

In rural counties, where immediate medical response times can be slower, the dangers of high-speed crashes are compounded, often leading to fatal outcomes.

According to the Nebraska Department of Transportation, speeding, failure to yield, and distracted driving are among the leading causes of fatal crashes in the state. In 2022, approximately 40% of fatal accidents involved speeding, while 20% were linked to driver distraction or inattention.

In Nebraska, the spouse, children, or parents of the deceased are typically the parties eligible to file a wrongful death lawsuit. If the deceased had no immediate family, the personal representative of the estate may pursue the claim. Surviving family members may be entitled to compensation for funeral expenses, medical bills incurred prior to death, lost financial support, loss of companionship, and emotional distress.
