Motorcycle Accidents in Nebraska

Omaha, NE - Two Injured in Motorcycle Crash on Abbott StMotorcycle accidents in Nebraska pose serious risks due to minimal physical protection for riders. Data from the Nebraska Department of Transportation indicates a steady rise in motorcycle-related injuries, particularly during warmer months. In 2023, over 400 motorcycle crashes were recorded, with many leading to severe or critical injuries.

Riders and passengers face unique risks. Below are some key issues tied to motorcycle crashes and what victims should be aware of:

  • Helmet Usage and Head Injuries: Wearing a helmet significantly reduces the risk of severe head trauma. In Nebraska, helmet laws are in place, yet noncompliance still leads to critical injuries. Riders without helmets are far more likely to suffer concussions, skull fractures, or permanent brain damage.
  • Traumatic Road Rash: When riders slide across pavement, layers of skin are often stripped away, causing what’s commonly known as road rash. These injuries can range from minor abrasions to severe tissue damage, often requiring skin grafts and long-term care.
  • Spinal Cord and Back Injuries: Back trauma is a frequent result of motorcycle crashes, sometimes leading to permanent mobility loss. Even low-speed accidents can cause serious spinal damage. Medical imaging and evaluations are essential after any such incident.
  • Passenger Vulnerability: Passengers often suffer worse injuries than drivers due to limited control over the vehicle and lack of protective gear. In many cases, they’re not secured properly, increasing the likelihood of being thrown from the motorcycle.
  • Nighttime Riding Risks: Riding after dark increases the likelihood of accidents. Visibility is reduced, and impaired drivers are more common during late hours. This time frame often sees more critical injuries from collisions.
