Gretna, NE (May 21, 2025) – A serious multi-vehicle collision occurred Tuesday evening along I-80 Eastbound near mile marker 440, resulting in multiple injuries and emergency medical responses from across Sarpy County.
Authorities were dispatched to the scene at approximately 5:26 p.m., where as many as five vehicles were involved in a crash on the interstate. According to reports, one of the injured was a 22-year-old woman who had been at a standstill on the road when her vehicle was rear-ended by a pickup truck traveling at full speed. She was wearing a seatbelt and reported head and neck pain. Papillion Medic 1 transported her to Bergan Mercy Medical Center under Code 3 Trauma.
In a separate incident connected to the crash, LifeNet 1-1 transported an unidentified man to the same hospital after he sustained critical injuries in a collision involving a semi-truck. Additional mutual aid came from Springfield and Papillion to support Gretna Rescue at the scene.
Eastbound lanes were blocked for a significant period as first responders worked to stabilize patients and secure the area. An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the accident and whether speed, distraction, or other factors contributed.
We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.
Car Accidents in Nebraska
Nebraska experiences thousands of motor vehicle crashes each year, many of which lead to serious injury or even death. In 2023 alone, the state recorded over 32,000 crashes, resulting in more than 1,100 serious injuries and nearly 250 fatalities. A substantial percentage of these incidents occurred on major highways like I-80. Victims and families often face long recoveries, financial strain, and emotional turmoil following such events.
For those wondering what dangers drivers face most often on Nebraska roads, here’s a closer look at common causes of multi-vehicle accidents like this one:
- Tailgating and Speeding: Driving too closely and speeding are among the most frequent contributors to rear-end collisions. In this crash, the 22-year-old woman was struck from behind, likely due to a combination of inattention and high speed. These factors drastically reduce the time a driver has to react in traffic and often lead to pileups on busy highways.
- Stopped Traffic on High-Speed Roads: When traffic unexpectedly stops or slows on interstates, vehicles approaching at high speeds have little room to maneuver. Crashes in these scenarios tend to cause significant injuries, particularly when larger vehicles like trucks are involved.
- Chain-Reaction Crashes: With multiple vehicles involved, the risk of compounded impact rises. One vehicle hitting another can push it into the next, and so on. These chain-reaction crashes complicate emergency response and heighten injury severity for everyone involved.
- Delayed Emergency Response Due to Congestion: Crashes on busy highways often cause major slowdowns, which in turn delay emergency medical response. Although mutual aid was called in this case, even brief delays can critically affect trauma care outcomes.
- Driver Distraction or Fatigue: While not yet confirmed in this case, distraction or driver fatigue often contributes to high-speed impacts. When attention lapses, even for a few seconds, drivers may not notice stopped traffic ahead—until it’s too late.
