Gretna, NE (April 7, 2025) – A deadly crash occurred on Sunday afternoon, April 6, in Gretna, resulting in the death of one person and sending another to the hospital with injuries. The incident happened at approximately 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 6 and Jansen Drive, according to the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO).
Authorities say a northbound pickup truck was attempting to turn left onto Jansen Dr when a southbound motorcycle collided with the truck. Emergency personnel from the Gretna Fire Department and SCSO responded quickly to the scene. Firefighters assisted with vehicle stabilization and scene control while paramedics worked to provide immediate medical aid.
The motorcyclist, identified as 21-year-old Joshua Bauer, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup, a 69-year-old man, was transported by ambulance to CHI Bergan Mercy Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation by the Sarpy County Crash Response Unit. Preliminary findings suggest that speed may have been a contributing factor. Traffic in the area was temporarily diverted as first responders secured the scene and conducted cleanup operations.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Joshua Bauer during this difficult time.
Fatal Motorcycle Accidents in Gretna
Motorcycle accidents are a growing concern in Nebraska, particularly in rapidly developing areas like Gretna. According to data from the Nebraska Department of Transportation, motorcyclists accounted for nearly 13% of all traffic fatalities in the state in 2023, despite making up a small fraction of registered vehicles. Intersections such as Hwy 6 and Jansen Dr are especially risky due to limited visibility and high-speed traffic, increasing the likelihood of serious or fatal collisions. In Sarpy County alone, multiple fatal motorcycle crashes have been reported in the past two years, drawing attention to the need for greater driver awareness and infrastructure improvements.
When a fatal motorcycle accident occurs due to the negligence of another driver, surviving family members may be eligible to file a wrongful death claim under Nebraska law. These civil lawsuits allow families to seek compensation for funeral costs, loss of financial support, and emotional suffering. In cases where excessive speed, failure to yield, or distracted driving played a role, legal action can also serve to hold the at-fault party accountable and promote safer driving behavior. Families are encouraged to consult with a qualified wrongful death attorney to understand their rights and next steps.
