Omaha, NE – Fatal Crash at 31st St & Q St Construction Pit

Omaha, NE (March 25, 2025) – A fatal crash occurred on Saturday night, March 22, in South Omaha, claiming the life of one individual after two separate accidents at the same location. Omaha Police Department (OPD) officers responded to the intersection of 31st Street and Q Street around 10:30 p.m., where they discovered two cars stacked inside a construction pit.

Authorities reported that the first crash happened at approximately 8:22 p.m. when a Ford Fusion, driven by 44-year-old Francisco Hernandez Martinez, plunged into an unmarked construction pit. The accident initially went unreported. More than two hours later, at 10:28 p.m., a Nissan Altima also crashed into the pit, landing on top of the Ford.

Emergency responders, including Omaha Fire Department crews, arrived to extract the vehicles. Paramedics confirmed that Hernandez Martinez had suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Nissan fled but later returned and was taken into custody on DUI charges. He was not injured.

Authorities shut down traffic in the area while investigators worked to determine the circumstances of both crashes. Omaha Police, firefighters, and medical personnel remained at the scene for several hours to clear and manage the wreckage. The investigation remains ongoing.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Francisco Hernandez Martinez during this grieving time.
