Pilger, NE – Semi Crash on Highway 15 Sends Wisner Woman to Hospital

Pilger, NE – Semi Crash on Highway 15 Sends Wisner Woman to Hospital

Pilger, NE (March 5, 2025) – A crash involving two semi-trucks on Highway 15 sent a Wisner woman to the hospital Tuesday afternoon as winter weather created hazardous driving conditions across Northeast Nebraska.

The accident happened around 4:10 p.m. on March 4, about 10 miles south of Pilger near 830th Road. According to reports, a 29-year-old Texas man was driving a southbound semi when it veered into the northbound lane. The truck bounced off a cable guardrail before colliding with a northbound semi driven by a 54-year-old woman from Wisner. After the initial impact, the southbound truck struck another guardrail on the west side of the road.

Emergency crews responded quickly, and Clarkson Rescue transported the Wisner woman to a hospital in West Point. Her injuries are not considered life-threatening. The driver of the southbound semi was unharmed.

Authorities say blowing snow and slushy road conditions contributed to the crash. Visibility in the area was extremely poor, and road surfaces continued to deteriorate as temperatures dropped. The accident forced the closure of Highway 15 between 828th and 841st roads while crews worked to clear the wreckage. Officials hoped to reopen the highway by 6:30 p.m. The accident is currently being investigated.

We hope the injured woman makes a full and speedy recovery.

Truck Accidents in Nebraska

Pilger, NE – Semi Crash on Highway 15 Sends Wisner Woman to HospitalEach year, Nebraska experiences numerous crashes involving semi-trucks, particularly in winter when snow and ice create dangerous road conditions. Large commercial trucks require longer stopping distances, making sudden weather-related hazards especially risky. State reports indicate that winter-related crashes account for a significant number of roadway incidents each year, often leading to severe injuries.

Understanding the risks of truck accidents is important. Here are some key concerns when these heavy vehicles are involved in crashes:

  • Reduced Maneuverability: Semi-trucks are significantly less agile than smaller vehicles, making it difficult for drivers to correct their course when encountering icy roads or sudden lane changes.
  • Jackknifing Risks: When a truck loses traction, the trailer can swing outward, creating a jackknife situation. These accidents often block multiple lanes and cause severe damage.
  • Increased Stopping Distances: Icy or wet roads make it even harder for large trucks to stop in time, increasing the risk of rear-end collisions and multi-vehicle pileups.
  • Weight and Impact Force: Due to their size and weight, semi-trucks cause significant damage in collisions. Even crashes at lower speeds can lead to serious injuries or fatalities.
  • Driver Fatigue: Long hours on the road, especially in poor weather, can leave truck drivers exhausted. Fatigue slows reaction times and increases the likelihood of mistakes behind the wheel.
