Omaha, NE (December 27, 2024) – A fatal car crash occurred Friday morning near Eppley Airfield, claiming the life of one individual. The Omaha Police Department (OPD) reported the wreck at approximately 8:00 a.m. at the intersection of John J. Pershing Dr and 16th St. According to authorities, a Toyota SUV traveling westbound on John J. Pershing Dr collided with the trailer of a semi-truck heading southbound on 16th St.
Emergency medical personnel transported the driver of the Toyota, 25-year-old Eloi Canals Morales, to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The semi-truck driver was unharmed but was cited for driving under the influence (DUI) and operating with an invalid commercial driver’s license.
Firefighters assisted in the removal of the vehicles, while law enforcement directed traffic and ensured safety in the area, which remained closed for over five hours during the investigation. Witnesses working nearby noted the intersection often experiences heavy traffic due to its proximity to the airport and industrial businesses.
Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Eloi Canals Morales during this difficult time.
Fatal Semi-Truck Accidents in Omaha
Semi-truck accidents in Nebraska account for a disproportionate number of fatal traffic incidents. In 2020, while large trucks were involved in just 4.4% of crashes statewide, they represented 15.1% of fatal collisions, resulting in 35 deaths. The sheer size and weight of these vehicles, combined with their elevated height, make them especially dangerous, often causing severe damage and fatalities in collisions.
Wrongful death claims in Nebraska arise when negligence or intentional actions lead to a person’s death. These claims, filed by the deceased’s estate representative for the benefit of family members, must be initiated within two years. Compensation typically includes funeral expenses, medical bills, lost income, and emotional distress. Attorneys play a crucial role in navigating the legal process and ensuring fair compensation for families during such challenging times.
